Community members near two drilling sites in South Los Angeles are trying to stop oil company Freeport McMoRan from expanding oil extraction within feet of homes and schools. On November 25th, the City Planning Department will hold a hearing to decide whether Freeport McMoran will need to conduct an EIR to drill one new well and re-stimulate two others. In contrast to Porter Ranch, the City Council has not voiced its support for an EIR at either of the South LA sites.
Proposed sites for oil extraction expansion are between 1349-1375 West Jefferson Boulevard. This expansion, and the City of Los Angeles potential unwillingness to call for an Environmental Impact Report sets a poor precedence.
Support your community. Attend the hearing or contact the City of Los Angeles Office of Zoning Administration to express your concerns.
