Registration

To register, please take the time to fill out the information below. Please know you must be a BHEHOA homeowner and include your BHE address (required) to be granted access to the Neighbor Corner.  Also, if you are a site member, or an HOA member, and have not been receiving the email updates, please register here.

Storm Damage Updates!

We are encouraging people to report damages using the survey at this link. FEMA is looking for cities to report to counties, and counties the report to the state.  We still do not know if the threshold for FEMA assistance to homeowners has been reached.

There will be a City portal available soon, which will have links to resources (e.g.: there's some effort to get assistance from NGOs who help with clean-ups, but I know people want that FEMA assistance!).

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions.  My email address is in the Neighbor Corner page (see above).

About

Important Updates!

Proposition 19 Death Tax Repeal.

Background:  Proposition 19 overturned prop 13-  Homeowners whose tax basis is fairly low could

transfer this same tax base to their children upon their death.  Prop 19 rescinded this law

and the tax base will trigger a reassessment to the current value, resulting in a huge tax increase.

BHE Neighbors,

We need to support each other!

Even if you didn’t have extensive property damage due to the severe winter rains, we need everyone to tell their stories to the City.  Let them know how you felt, what you saw, and what your neighbors experienced.  Let’s face it, some of the hills in our neighborhood are unstable, and all of our properties are at risk.  Please take a moment to complete the City survey and tell the story.  Everyone in your house can take the survey.

Our community is counting on you!

Special Announcement from the
Board of Directors

Emergency Management Department has provided an update for our residents

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Another storm is forecasted for this week. The Emergency Management Department has provided an update for our residents. Below, you will find a situation overview and links to resources. Please know City and County Officials are working to mitigate problems in areas that have been impacted or might be affected by incoming rain.

Let's stay safe together,

Marqueece Harris-Dawson

Situation Overview

The residents of Los Angeles have started off this 2023 year with unusually high levels of rainfall. January, February, and early March rainstorms have saturated hillsides Citywide. During the most recent storm, which began March 14, City and County operational departments worked together to respond to the immediate impacts of the storm and to address areas of the community which experienced slope failures or debris flow. While initial assessments have taken place at the request of local officials, hillsides that continue to be compromised are being reassessed before the upcoming storm. Both City and County Officials are working together to ensure residential concerns are addressed.

In the Baldwin Hills/Baldwin Vista area of South LA, a small number of homes have been tagged by the Department of Building and Safety (DBS) for limited access.

The Bureau of Streets Services (BSS) cleared debris from several roads to reduce interruptions to daily activity. Early Wednesday, March 15, a significant portion of northbound South La Brea Avenue - between Stocker Street and Coliseum Street - was closed for approximately 10 hours while BSS crews cleared mud and debris and placed K-rails. One lane remains partially closed, and impacts have been stabilized.

Residents whose properties have been impacted due to slope failures are being contacted directly by the Department of Building and Safety. Follow-up assessments for all affected properties will be conducted by Monday, March 20, 2023.

The City’s Emergency Management Department (EMD) will continue coordinating with Council District 8 and Mayor’s Office staff to provide updates as they arise.

Forward Outlook

According to the National Weather Service, up to two inches of rain are forecasted between Tuesday (March 21) and Wednesday (March 22), with peak rainfall expected midday Tuesday.

City agencies and utilities crews will be active and available for mitigation throughout the next storm. Angelenos should contact 9-1-1 for possible life-threatening storm-related emergencies. Call 3-1-1 or download the cellphone app for MyLA311 for other impacts, such as mudslides, street flooding, downed power lines, or fallen trees.

Baldwin Hills Elementary Wins Fight

for Educational Justice!

Thanks to Everyone Who Wrote Letters of Support!

Recently, Baldwin Hills Elementary successfully gained back their campus. The school had been forced to share their campus with a charter school since 2016, which has been a drain on learning space, resources, and Special Education and social-emotional support programs for students. After a very public years-long fight, the charter company decided to leave in search of another space. It was the organizing work and persistence of Baldwin Hills educators, families, and community members that pushed the charter company to relinquish their hold on the campus space.

We brought Fiber Optics to BHE!

One of our residents contacted the CEO of ATT and asked that Fiber Optics be

made available in our community.  With our advocacy and perseverance, the

project was completed ahead of schedule.  The kick-off event was held on

March 12th in conjunction with a petition signing to repeal the Prop 19 Death Tax.

We are an active community with a robust HOA  whose mission to make sure that we

have a voice in the decisions that impact us.
